Join Penelope Newton-Hurley, Communications Specialist & Chief Inspector Chris Jennings, Hostage & Crisis Negotiator for an interactive learning session on effective communications used in difficult situations.

The session will cover:

  • Understanding the basic elements of emotional intelligence
  • Controlling your ‘internal communication’ (self talk)
  • Mastering the art of being present
  • Social rules of negotiation
  • Assessing behavioral & situational risks in conflict situations

About the Speakers

Chris Jennings

With over 12 years experience of working with various UK police forces as a senior Hostage and Crisis Negotiator,Chris is able to apply the rules of principled negotiation to assist deadlocked parties work through conflict, difference and disagreement. Outside of his practice he enjoys running(increasingly slowly) and spending time with his family. He is looking forward to meeting experienced mediators and exchanging knowledge as he embarks on a new phase in his career in mediation and negotiation.

Penelope Newton-Hurley

Penny became a Communication Consultant and Troubleshooter in Internal Communication and Communication Skills in 1998. She has since worked with Senior Management teams on communication strategy, policy and tactical plans.

Penny is motivated by the desire to spread authentic, mindful and empathic communication skills as far and wide as possible. Being able to see a difference in people’s performance and experience of work, and life in general, through improved communication.

Her  interests include general Aviation (the focus required and the freedom and thrill gained from being able to pilot an aircraft from A to B or in an aerobatic sequence!); boot camp-style fitness and running races; the challenge of bringing up two children; reading books on personal development; walking in the woods.
Penny is looking forward to meeting other mediators and sharing experiences and ideas at this event.
